So I was on my favorite clothing website looking for some new threads for spring. I found a few kinda nice things but that had a few details that I couldn't fully get behind or that were missing and I wanted to add. I thought to myself how do I find the perfect hoodie that sits just right and as a bonus has a sick print.
That's when I had the idea to just make my very own clothing line. As a young adult that preferred to go out partying on Friday rather than put in a couple of hours of work, I was quite intimidated after a bit of research. There is so much work that goes into starting a clothing line. What eventually convinced me to start this project was one of my good friends that already had some experience with printing shirts and the fact that people liked my first mockups. I had a vision. Now I needed a purpose. Some things had been annoying me for quite some time now. I didn't like the fact that more and more people around the world were getting depressed because of how fast information travels nowadays. You know within seconds what an unbelievably amazing time your mates are having on their holiday while you're stuck in school or at work. The worst part is that it's probably not as good as it's portrayed in their story on Social Media, especially that one influencer's photoshopped butt. That aside I also noticed that no one was talking about the good stuff in the media. When's the last time you saw a news article about how that cat was saved by Mr. fireman?
I want to help spread the good word and let people feel more at ease in day-to-day life. Show people that you can have a great time on the most mundane of days without being envious of people you don't even like. That's how I got the idea for one of my first t-shirts: the headline tee. It says: "breaking news: too much news… where has all the good news gone?" And not to my surprise it was the best-selling shirt. It sold out in a week tops.
But back to the story, I was telling… I was still nowhere. I didn't know where to get my clothing made. I didn't know how to print on clothing. I didn't know anything about packaging and shipping and I only had limited knowledge of marketing. I started by finding a brand name. It took me about three weeks until I remembered my grandmother telling me while laughing "that's nonsense" when I was being or saying something silly. I was being a kid and wasn't taking myself too seriously. I thought why shouldn't adults do the same? That's where the brand had its first light. The Nonsense Star is an impossible object. It looks three-dimensional but it could never actually exist as a 3D object. I used to like drawing it and as soon as I thought of the brand name I thought of this star because it literally makes no sense and everyone deserves a star in my eyes… Next step. I went online and found a few companies that would print on clothing for me. However, I wanted the printing part to be in my control so I could test prints and find the perfect shapes, sizes, and colors without having to order previews. So I invested a chunk of my savings in blank threads and I bought a screen printing machine with all the bits and bobs to get started. With that machine, Nonsense was born. From There I released my first collection that was positively received.
That showed me I was on the right track and that I should keep going on this route. The next step is to give artists in my area the chance to be a part of Nonsense… so stay tuned and take a step back from all the seriousness of everyday life...
